The first hut was built in 1881, it was a cave summarily arranged and being able to place 10 people,
then the second, built in 1893 was placed on one of the lateral moraines of the glacier, it could accomodate 12 people. An enlarging of this one in 1909, made it possible to receive 32 people.
In 1933, the wood hut is doubled of a stone wall and a room for the guard as well as a woodshed are added in appendix on the western side, which makes it possible to have 42 places.
In 1959 the construction of superimposed berths changes the number of places to 60.
Finally the fourth in 1969 can place 100 people. During 19 years it shelters many mountaineers and visitors then one day of March 1988... an avalanche started on the top of “Grand Tavé” and shaves this hut firmly built.
During this year 1988, the site seems abandoned and sorry!
1989 see the construction of the provisional hut of 32 places.
From 1988 to 1996, thousand negociations are exchanged between the Commune of Bagnes and the Genevoise section of the Alpine Club to know which will rebuild the hut.
The Fédéral court will slice in favour of the Commune of Bagnes which, for the benefit of a gift of the Association François-Xavier Bagnoud will rebuild the hut.
This one bears from now on the name of Hut François-Xavier Bagnoud. Located a little downstream from the old hut with the altitude of 2645 m. it can accomodate since March 1997 103 people.
